Public Schools

Louisiana has 1303 public schools in 70 school districts. The overwhelming majority of public schools are run by school districts.

Charter Schools

Charter schools are publicly-funded schools that are run independently of the school district. Charter schools are run by a not-for-profit organization governed by a board of directors comprised of parents, educators and business leaders in the community. To learn more, visit Charter Schools.

Safe and Healthy Schools

Louisiana has adopted a coordinated, comprehensive approach to create a climate for achievement in schools and to promote healthy lifestyles among students. The approach has three major components: School Climate (discipline and bullying prevention, child welfare and attendance), School Health (physical education, health education, nursing services, school-based Medicaid services, related health services, adapted physical education, and oral health) and School Transportation.
