Winners of Prestigious Award to be Announced by U.S. Department of Education in September 2019
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Louisiana Department of Education has nominated six public schools to receive 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools awards. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, which is managed by the U.S. Department of Education, honors schools that are either high-performing or have closed achievement gaps, especially among minority or disadvantaged students. These schools demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels.
"These six schools stand out for their ability to either steadily improve student achievement over subsequent years or consistently remain one of the top performing schools in the state," said State Superintendent John White. "This is a commendable achievement worthy of this distinguished honor."
Four of the nominated schools are recognized as "Exemplary High Performing Schools." They are among the state's highest-performing schools as measured by state assessments. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also at the highest levels. The schools include:
- Haynes Academy School for Advanced Studies, Jefferson Parish
- Early College Academy, Lafayette Parish
- Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy, Jefferson Parish
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies, Jefferson Parish
Two of the nominated schools are recognized as "Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools." They are among the state's highest-performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school's subgroups and all students over the past five years. The schools include:
- Bayou Black Elementary School, Terrebonne Parish
- St. Charles Elementary School, Lafourche Parish
Winners of the 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools awards will be announced in September 2019.
