Each year schools receive numerical scores known as School Performance Scores (SPS).
School Performance Scores for the 2011-2012 school year are based on the following calculations:
- K-5 Schools – Attendance Index (10%), Assessment Index (90%)
- K-8, 7-8 Schools – Attendance Index (5%), Dropout Index (5%), and
Assessment Index (90%)
- 9-12 Schools - Graduation Index (30%) and Assessment Index (70%)
Letter grades correspond to Baseline School Performance Scores, and correspond to the following grading scale:

Schools will receive School Performance Scores for the 2012-2013 school year and beyond based on the following calculations:
- K-7 Schools – LEAP Assessment Index (100%)
- Schools with an 8th grade –Dropout/ Credit Accumulation Index (5%), and Assessment Index (95%)
- 9-12 Schools – ACT index (25%), EOC index (25%), Graduation Index (25%), Graduation Cohort Rate (25%)

Letter grades may be followed by a “Top Gains” label, which signifies a school has achieved its Growth Goal. “A” schools will have growth goals of 5 SPS points, or reaching 150 total points, and “B”-“F" schools will have growth goals of 10 SPS points. Schools that decline by at least one-tenth of a point from the previous year will be labeled “Declining.”
Schools can earn up to 10 bonus points that are added directly to their SPS score for significant improvement with their non-proficient subgroup component. In order to earn a bonus, schools must have at least ten students in their non-proficient subgroup. If at least 30% of the non-proficient subgroup meets or exceeds expectations on their ELA or Math assessments as determined by the Value-Added Model, schools are eligible for the bonus.
Bonus points are calculated by multiplying either the percentage or the number of non-proficient students who meet or exceed expectations by 0.1, whichever is higher.
Example: 40 out of 120 students in the non-proficient subgroup meet or exceed expectations.
40* 0.1 = 4 bonus points
Bonus points are added directly to SPS and count toward Growth Goals.

Prior to the 2010-2011 school year, schools received performance labels based on a star system outlined in the chart below.
