DEPARTMENT NAMES FINALISTS FOR 2018 TEACHER AND PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR AWARDS

BATON ROUGE, La.--The Louisiana Department of Education today announced the finalists for the 2018 Teacher and Principal of the Year awards. The 18 finalists are elementary, middle and high school educators from school districts across the state. Winners will be selected from this group and announced at a celebration ceremony next month.

 

"Educators are among the most important factors in the success of Louisiana children, and it is an honor to recognize this talented and passionate group for making exceptional gains," said State Superintendent John White. "These finalists, along with the thousands of other dedicated educators across the state, have continually raised the bar, pushing our students to achieve at the highest levels, and we appreciate their hard work."

This year, nearly 80 hiring authorities submitted nominations for Teacher and Principal of the Year.TheDepartment named48 semi-finalistsin April 2017. A state-level team of content experts

then narrowed that pool to the 18 finalists announced today. Those finalists will soon participate in face-to-face interviews with state selection committees led by community and educationleaders. The selection committees will ultimately choose the state division-level and overall winners.

 

All Teacher and Principal of the Year finalists and semi-finalists will be honored and the overall state-level winners will beannounced at the11th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebrationon Friday, July 28, 2017, at the Crown Plaza Executive Center in Baton Rouge. The event is co-sponsored byDream Teachers, a nonprofit organization that with business, industry and organizations throughout the state to recognize and reward educators who model instructional excellence and dedication to serve the needs of children.
